Dr. Shields is a resident physician in the department of internal medicine, Dr. Nayak is a fellow in the division of cardiology, Dr. Chhieng is a resident physician in the department of emergency medicine, Dr. Fleenor is a staff pediatric cardiologist in the division of pediatric cardiology, Dr. Weis is the head of the division of rheumatology, and Dr. Linz is the chairman of the department of internal medicine, all at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA.
Adult cases—such as that which occurred in this young, healthy military recruit—are rare. If left untreated, however, this disease can cause serious cardiovascular complications in patients of any age.
