Chewing gum for 15 minutes can help get the gut working again more quickly after laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, according to researchers at the Klinikum Klagenfurt am Wöerthersee and the Medical University Vienna, both in Austria. Gum chewing had already been shown to stimulate and improve motility after both open and laparoscopic surgery, but the studies had only been done in bowel surgery patients, say the researchers.
