ACIP Updates Adult Immunization Schedule
Ann Intern Med; 2019 Feb 5; Kim, Hunter, et al
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released its updated adult immunization schedule for 2019 for adults aged ≥19 years. The ACIP’s recommendations on use of each vaccine are developed after in-depth review of vaccine-related data, including disease epidemiology and burden of disease, vaccine efficacy and effectiveness, vaccine safety, the quality of evidence, feasibility of program implementation, and economic analysis of immunization policy. Among the updated recommendations and changes to the 2019 schedule:
- Any licensed influenza vaccine that is appropriate for the age and health status of the patients may be used.
- The new single-antigen recombinant hepatitis B vaccine (Heplisav-B) is recommended for prevention of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
- Homelessness was added as an indication for routine hepatitis A vaccination, along with other high-risk populations such as men who have sex with men and persons who use injection or noninjection drugs.
- The full ACIP recommendations for each vaccine can be found at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/acip-recs/index.html.
