Online Yoga Intervention in MPN Patients Evaluated

Haematologica; ePub 2017 Jun 8; Huberty, et al

A home-based, online yoga intervention is feasible in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), and may improve symptom burden, according to a study involving 38 individuals.

Participants were asked to perform 60-minutes of yoga each week. They completed online surveys at baseline, as well as 7, 12, and 16 weeks later. Investigators assessed pain intensity, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and sexual function. Among the results:

  • 68% of responding participants felt either satisfied or very satisfied with online yoga.
  • Three-fourths felt that it was helpful for coping with MPN-related symptoms.
  • 43% said that they were likely to continue online yoga.
  • 82% said they would recommend online yoga to other MPN patients.
  • Participants experienced significant improvements in total symptom burden, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and fatigue.
  • Outcomes were similar in those who completed more or less than the recommended 60 minutes per week.
