Previous HBV & Clinical Outcomes in HCV

Previous hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can adversely affect liver health in persons with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a recent study found. The population-level analysis aimed to determine any association of previous HBV infection with liver outcomes using antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb) positivity as a marker to exposure. Researchers found:

Records of 8,513 chronic HCV patients were included in the analyses.
Multivariate cause-special proportional hazards models showed previous HBV infection significantly increased the risk of decompensated cirrhosis (HR, 1.29) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HR, 1.64).
However, previous HBV infection did not increase the risk of liver-related death (HR, 1.02).
