Previous HBV & Clinical Outcomes in HCV

J Viral Hepat; ePub 2018 Mar 25; Wang, et al

Previous hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can adversely affect liver health in persons with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a recent study found. The population-level analysis aimed to determine any association of previous HBV infection with liver outcomes using antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb) positivity as a marker to exposure. Researchers found:

  • Records of 8,513 chronic HCV patients were included in the analyses.
  • Multivariate cause-special proportional hazards models showed previous HBV infection significantly increased the risk of decompensated cirrhosis (HR, 1.29) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HR, 1.64).
  • However, previous HBV infection did not increase the risk of liver-related death (HR, 1.02).
