Metabolic Syndrome: Radical Prostatectomy Carries Impotence Risk
Key clinical point: Radical prostatectomy (RP) was safe from a complications standpoint in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS), but patients with MetS undergoing RP were at an increased risk for post-RP incontinence and impotence.
Major finding: Erections with or without therapy were reached in 55.8% of non-MetS patients and 41.8% of MetS patients; a significant difference in pre-operation function was observed.
Study details: Data from 5,758 RP patients at 1 referral center in a 10 year period; 17.7% of patients presented with MetS before surgery.
Disclosures: None reported.
