Adherence to the MIND diet, a hybrid of the Mediterranean and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diets, may decrease the risk of Alzheimer disease better than either of the diets alone. That is the key finding from a prospective study of 923 men and women ages 58 to 98 years old.
Researchers used a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to assess subjects’ diets, and found the MIND diet provided benefits in both the second and highest tertiles, while DASH and Mediterranean diets each only provided benefits in the highest tertiles, with the following hazard ratios:
• MIND, highest: 0.47
• MIND, second: 0.65
• DASH, highest: 0.61
• Mediterranean, highest: 0.46
