In part 1 of a 3 part series, James Griffith, MD, joins MDedge Psychiatry Editor-in-Chief Lorenzo Norris, MD, to define resilience. Dr. Griffith is the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the George Washington University School of Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Griffith notes that currently, there are as many as six or seven different definitions of resilience and that whenever a clinical term becomes widely used in popular culture, the term can get muddled. Dr. Griffith says that he draws heavily on previous work by Froma Walsh, Ph.D., to help him define resilience as a practice -- “something that you do, not something that you are.”
