Early parental death may heighten odds of dementia
Key clinical point: Early parental death is associated with an increased risk of dementia. Interventions intended to reduce the negative health consequences of adverse childhood events, including interventions that modify biologic markers of stress, increase resilience, or promote coping strategies, have been developed.
Major finding: The crude odds ratio for dementia in individuals who experienced the death of the father or mother at age 16 years or younger was 1.83. After adjusting for age, gender, and education, the odds ratio was 1.54.
Study details: A population‐based case‐control study of 65,997 participants from the seventh wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) study.
Disclosures: SHARE data collection was funded by the European Commission. The German Ministry of Education and Research, the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, the US National Institute on Aging, and various national funding sources also supported the research. The authors had no conflicts of interest.
