Pandemic poses distinct challenges for people with dementia

Key clinical point: The COVID-19 pandemic raises concerns about the care of people with dementia, who may be more vulnerable to the novel coronavirus, have difficulty remembering public health guidance, and rely on in-person support. Among patients with dementia who require intensive care for COVID-19, a new hospital environment may increase stress and behavioral problems. Delirium caused by hypoxia may complicate the presentation of dementia.

Major finding: In response to COVID-19 outbreaks, Alzheimer’s disease and geriatric psychiatry organizations in China made recommendations about mental health and psychosocial support for people with dementia. Multidisciplinary teams provided counseling services for patients and their carers.

Disclosures: Several authors disclosed financial relationships with pharmaceutical and medical device companies unrelated to their report.
