Sleep quality may affect COPD risk in African American smokers

Key clinical point: Total sleep time and greater sleep efficacy were significantly associated with better performance on a walk test in African Americans who smoked.

Major finding: Smokers of at least 10 cigarettes per day gained 0.04-0.60 meters on a walk test for every added minute of total sleep time; every added percentage of sleep efficiency gained 0.83-6.62 meters.

Study details: The data come from a cross-sectional study of 209 African American adult smokers.

Disclosures: The study was supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, both part of the National Institutes Health. The researchers had no financial conflicts to disclose.
